This is a picture of the “view from the pool” from an installation piece that was designed by the WORK Architecture Company for MoMA with P.S. 1's Young Architects Program and Contemporary Art Center .
The intent of the project was to educate visitors on sustainable urban farming by using contemporary art and architecture. The urban farm is built completely of recyclable material, solar powered and is made of cardboard tubes that hold vegetables, fruit and flowers.
It's kind of like a garden/farm in the middle of the city, but first and foremost a work of art. I like how it is very contemporary looking, but earth friendly too. The building in the background is a reminder that this is all still in one of the world's largest and dirtiest cities.
This project is truly amazing, particularly because it is a step toward proving the feasibility of sustainable agriculture, especially in urban areas. I love community programs that promote art, this one is special because not only is it promoting beauty and curiosity, but also that saving the environment can be an enjoyable experience. Plus, each of the columns is a different experience, from benches for sitting, mobile phone charging stations (definitely a sign of our time!) and even a juice bar for the farmers market.
Also, go HERE and and buy a t-shirt (or just donate anyway) as the creators are still trying to fund the completion of the project. Wear the shirt around town to show support for urban farming and a sustainable world… plus, you can pretend to be a farmer when you wear it.
